Introduction
Situated in Birendranagar, Surkhet — the administrative headquarters of Karnali Province, one of Nepal’s most geographically remote and historically underserved regions — Mid-West University (MU) stands as a symbol of educational equity and regional pride. Established on June 17, 2010 through a Parliament Act by the Government of Nepal, MU is an autonomous public institution built on the concept of Nepal’s multi-university system, with one clear purpose: to bring the advantages of quality higher education directly to the people of the mid-western region.
With over 15,000 students, 7 graduate schools, 50+ academic programs, 16 constituent campuses spread across Karnali Province and beyond, and a central library stocking over 45,000 books and 240 journals, Mid-West University has grown from a regional aspiration into a fully-fledged academic institution serving the educational, economic, and social needs of one of Nepal’s most important provinces.

History & Background
The story of Mid-West University is one of community determination as much as government policy. The formal journey began in 2052 BS (1995 AD) under the leadership of the District Development Committee (DDC) of Surkhet. A historic decision was made that same year at the DDC Federation Nepal meeting held in Dang — that a university would be established in Surkhet to serve the people of the mid-western region.
The movement was led initially by the then Chairperson of DDC Surkhet, Mr. Govinda Bahadur Malla, and Mr. Bal Krishna B.C. Momentum continued under Mr. Bhushan Kumar Manandhar as head of the university establishment committee, who led delegations to the government time and again, creating sustained political pressure for the cause. Crucially, local people themselves contributed to a fundraising campaign for the university — a rare and powerful demonstration of grassroots commitment to higher education.
For more than a decade, the people of the mid-western region waited. Their patience was rewarded on June 17, 2010, when the Parliament of Nepal formally established Mid-West University through legislation. The university was built on the foundation of existing Tribhuvan University-affiliated campuses in the region — absorbing their land, property, human resources, and students to create a new, independent institution.
The establishment of MU represented the fulfilment of a cherished dream — not just for academics and policymakers, but for an entire region that had long watched higher education opportunities concentrate in Kathmandu while its own students were forced to travel hundreds of kilometres for a university degree.
“To transform Mid-West University into a nationally respected and globally connected centre of academic excellence, research, innovation, and ethical leadership — moving forward with unity, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.” — Vision of Mid-West University
Graduate Schools & Academic Programs
Mid-West University organises its academic offerings across seven graduate schools, covering a broad range of disciplines from engineering and science to law, education, and the humanities. Programs are offered at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), MPhil, and PhD levels through a semester-based credit system.
From 2025, all undergraduate programs are being redesigned under a labor market-driven, STEM-focused model — a significant reform aimed at producing highly skilled graduates who meet both national and international professional standards. Standard undergraduate programs span four years across eight semesters and 120 credit hours, structured around foundation, core, specialisation, elective, and practicum courses, culminating in a field-based internship and final project.
1. Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences Offers BA and MA programs across a range of social science and humanities disciplines. This school is home to a particularly distinctive program: the Master of Arts in Conflict and Peace Studies — a course uniquely relevant to Nepal’s post-conflict society and the Karnali region’s history of political and economic marginalisation.
2. Graduate School of Education Sciences Provides BEd and MEd programs including specialisations in Education Planning and Management and School Counseling. The school conducts scientific research on educational challenges across disciplines, engaging with regional and national community organisations, educational institutions, and policy stakeholders. It is a core institution for training the teachers and educational administrators that Karnali Province urgently needs.
3. Graduate School of Management Offers Bachelor in Business Studies (BBS), Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor in Hotel Management (BHM), Bachelor in Travel and Tourism Management, Master in Business Studies (MBS), Master in Business Administration (MBA), and MPhil/PhD in Management. The autonomous Mid-West University School of Management, located in Bulbulechowk, Birendranagar, is a key delivery institution for these programs.
4. Graduate School of Science and Technology Covers Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology, Bachelor in Information Technology (BIT), BSc in Biology, and a range of MSc programs. The school hosted MU’s 3rd Convocation in 2025 and celebrated the 12th National Science Day, reflecting a growing culture of scientific celebration and community engagement on campus.
5. Graduate School of Engineering Offers Bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Hydropower Engineering — with Master’s programs in Structural Engineering and Construction Management. The inclusion of Hydropower Engineering is particularly significant given Karnali Province’s extraordinary river systems, making MU one of the few universities in Nepal directly training engineers for the country’s most important energy resource.
6. Graduate School of Law Provides undergraduate and postgraduate legal education, producing lawyers, judges, and public servants to meet the governance and justice needs of the mid-western region. Access to legal education in this historically underserved area has long been a gap — one that MU is directly addressing.
7. Graduate School of Agriculture and Forestry Offers programs in agriculture, forestry, and natural resource management — addressing the livelihoods and environmental priorities of a province whose economy is deeply tied to land, forests, and rivers. This school is closely aligned with MU’s broader commitment to sustainable rural development.
Constituent Campuses Across the Region
One of Mid-West University’s most important features is its geographically distributed network of 16 constituent campuses — bringing university-level education directly into communities across Karnali Province and surrounding areas. These campuses are not just satellite offices; they are active educational institutions serving thousands of students in districts that would otherwise have no access to higher education.
The constituent campus network includes:
- Central Campus of Humanities and Social Sciences, Birendranagar
- Central Campus of Education, Birendranagar
- Central Campus of Management, Birendranagar
- Central Campus of Science and Technology, Birendranagar
- Central Campus of Engineering, Birendranagar
- Central Campus of Law, Birendranagar
- Bageshwori Multiple Campus, Kohalpur, Banke
- Babai Multiple Campus, Gulariya
- Narayan Multiple Campus, Dailekh
- Tila Karnali Multiple Campus, Kalikot
- Rara Multiple Campus, Mugu
- Musikot Khalanga Multiple Campus, Rukum
- Bheri Gyanodaya Multiple Campus, Jajarkot
- Jaljala Multiple Campus, Rolpa
- Bheri Multiple Campus, Gumi, Surkhet
- Vidhyapur Janata Multiple Campus, Surkhet
This network means that students from remote mountain districts — Mugu, Kalikot, Rukum, Jajarkot, and beyond — can access a university education without leaving their home province.
Campus Life & Resources
The central campus and administrative offices of Mid-West University are located at Birendranagar-8, Surkhet — the provincial capital and a growing city in Nepal’s mid-western belt. The campus provides a calm and structured academic environment with improving digital infrastructure and student-focused facilities.
Central Library: MU’s central library is a significant academic resource for the region, housing over 45,000 books and 240 journals. The university also supports digital libraries and e-learning portals, enabling remote access to academic materials — a critical feature for a region where students may be studying from distant constituent campuses or rural communities.
Digital Infrastructure: MU’s digitalisation strategy integrates its academic operations with Nepal’s national higher education policy. The MU Digital Academic System (MU-DAS) supports examination management, student records, and academic administration across its distributed campus network.
Student Welfare: MU promotes a student-centred campus culture, with academic clubs, seminars, workshops, and community outreach programs. It has been recognised at the national level for inter-university sports performance — including a championship in the Inter-University T20 Cricket Championship (Jay Nepal Cup) and a third-place finish in national university sports rankings.
Governance: The university follows a participatory governance model with transparency and inclusiveness at its core. Key governing bodies include the Senate (chaired by the Chancellor — the Prime Minister), the Executive Council, and the Academic Council, with representation from faculty, students, civic leaders, business representatives, and donors.
Research & International Collaboration
Research at Mid-West University is tied closely to the challenges and opportunities of Nepal’s mid-western region — an area rich in natural resources, biodiversity, river systems, and cultural heritage, but historically under-researched and under-resourced.
Current research priorities include sustainable rural development, hydropower and energy policy, environmental conservation, conflict and peace studies, agricultural innovation, and educational reform. The Graduate School of Science and Technology has hosted national science day events and workshops on topics such as ecopreneurship — connecting academic research to green entrepreneurship in the region.
On the international front, MU is engaged in the NSIS Project under Erasmus+, a European Union-funded international collaboration program — reflecting the university’s ambitions to connect its academic community to global networks. The university has also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with partner institutions and participates in international academic conferences, with dedicated conferences held in 2024, 2025, and 2026.
Affordability, Equity & Inclusion
Consistent with its founding mission, Mid-West University prioritises affordable, accessible education for students from rural and economically marginalised backgrounds. As a public institution, tuition fees — particularly at constituent campuses — are kept significantly lower than private alternatives, making degree programs reachable for students from Karnali’s mountain communities and Terai districts alike.
The university reserves seats for students from marginalised communities across its programs. Its geographic distribution across 16 campuses means that higher education is accessible not only in Surkhet city but in some of Nepal’s most remote and historically disadvantaged districts — including Mugu, Kalikot, Jajarkot, and Rolpa.
Distance learning and e-learning initiatives further extend MU’s reach, ensuring that geography and poverty are not barriers to earning a university degree.
Vision for the Future
Mid-West University is actively preparing for the next phase of its development. Under its long-term vision plan, the university is working toward:
- New Programs and Academic Centres: Disciplines under development include emerging fields aligned with Nepal’s future workforce and development priorities, including STEM-focused programs, interdisciplinary laboratories, and research hubs
- STEM-Driven Curriculum Reform: From 2025, all undergraduate programs are being redesigned around labour market demands and STEM competencies
- Expanding Capacity: The university currently serves 15,000 students but has the infrastructure capacity to grow to 30,000 — a target that reflects the enormous unmet demand for higher education in the region
- Global Connectivity: Through Erasmus+ and ongoing MoU partnerships, MU is building the international connections needed to benchmark its programs against global standards
- Research Infrastructure: Building interdisciplinary laboratories and research hubs that generate knowledge relevant to Karnali Province and Nepal’s national development goals
